What is a community group?
A community group is a group of people “doing life together.”
A community group is NOT a Bible study; however, Scripture is the foundation of a community group as members, through the power of the Holy Spirit, fulfill Christ’s command to “love one another.”
The purpose of a community group is to reflect God’s design for how His people are to relate with one another, something we refer to as “biblical community.” At its core, Jesus is calling his followers to “love one another,” just as he has loved them (John 13:34-35). The practical side of loving one another is fleshed out throughout the New Testament in about fifty “one another” statements. We are to “encourage one another” (1 Thessalonians 5:11), “spur one another on” (Hebrews10:24-25), “admonish one another” (Colossians 3:16), etc.
The six core values of community (Devote Daily, Pursue Relationally, Live Authentically, Admonish Faithfully, Counsel Biblically, and Engage Missionally) are a summary of these “one anothers” of Scripture. They serve as a temperature gauge to check how the Spirit is working in and through our lives and into others as we fulfill Christ’s command to love one another.
These questions and core values are meant to help you walk in the freedom and grace of Christ. They are NOT to make you feel like a failure, or worse, to be used to compare yourself to others! It is for freedom that Christ has set us free (Galatians 5:1), and that freedom affords us the opportunity to live and love others as we have been loved (1John 4:19).
